KIETZMANN (Kitzman) Rosalie Auguste Kietzmann/Steinke’s family
Johann Wilhelm Kietzmann (born 1828 in Buchwerder, Prussia) and M.Heinrette Kunke/Kietzmann (born 1831 in Dranau, West Prussia) were parents of Rosalie, Ottillie, Robert William, & Amelia. Johann W. Kietzmann (“Vilem” in German) was a guardian to the Queen (German Royalty, possibly Queen of Prussia) during the mid 1800’s. He’d accompany her when she would ride horses. Johann was a Master Blacksmith in Germany. Johann had a certificate that he was a Master Blacksmith, and with that he could travel anywhere and work, but without it you couldn’t.
Their children Ottillie and Robert W., came to the US first in 1881 and worked in New York, to raise some money.. Rosalie followed with her parents, to New York. (Ernst thought the possibly traveled on an English boat and came through Ellis Island, which had a different name at that time…possibly Castle Garden.) Rosalie exchanged with her brother Robert. Rosalie stayed in New York for about a year and did house work and ran errands for people to make enough money to travel back to Iowa. Robert came with Johann and Henriette to Gibson ( called Nausea at the time). Ernst said that the first time he took Rosalie to church in Muscatine, years later , Rosalie recognized the depot there and remembered it from traveling through from New York. Rosalie was about 12 when she came over from Germany. Rosalie was confirmed at 13 at St Martin Lutheran Church near What Cheer, May 1882.
Johann Wilhelm Kietzmann and Heinrette, parents of Rosalie Kitzman/Steinke lived in Janetown (about 1 mile north of What Cheer). Johann worked for a mining company in What Cheer as a blacksmith. He only lived and worked in the US for about 3 years before he died of cancer, at the age of 57. (1885) Ernst told me that Johann W. Kietzmann does not have a grave stone, but he was buried in the St Martin Lutheran Cemetery, in the northwest corner.
Rosalie did housework and laundry to make money after her father died.
Henriette (Kunke) Kietzmann was born in Germany. Ernst said that his mother used to tell him he story about how Henriette’s parents were killed. Henrietta’s mother and father were killed by Napoleons Army in Germany. (possibly late1830’s) Henriette came home from parochial school that day to find her mother and father dead. Henrietta was saved since she was in school when it happened. Henriette then went to live with the preacher and was raised by them. Johann and Henriette were married in Germany and had their 4 children there.
Henriette died at the Gottlieb Steinke farm (1914). Otillie Kietzman/Remmark, Rosalie’s sister, cared for Henriette in her last couple years of life, and then Rosalie took care of her before she passed away at their farm. Ernst was told that Henreitte recognized Ernst who was in his first year of life, while she was living there. Henriette is buried at the St Martin Lutheran Cemetery.
Gottfried (born 1798) and Luise (Zander) Kietzmann (born 1810 Buchwerder, Posen- Germany) were parents of Johann W.Kietzmann. They were also the parents of Wilhelmine, Carloline, Beata Luise, Samuel, Martin, and August S. Kietzmann. Luise Zander/Kietzmann is buried in the St Martin Lutheran, east of What Cheer, Iowa. (died 1890 near What Cheer)
